Reproduction Coffee Tables

Coffee tables are made today for modern living.  Their style is based on designs of period tables and those described as “antique” are frequently tables which have been cut down.

Tea drinking in Britain was at the height of fashion  in the 1750s  and tables were used when putting down a hot drink between sips, this was the beginning of the tea table which were usually  taller than  today’s “coffee table” . Other tables used at this time which could be placed near a sofa were called occasional tables, end tables and centre tables.

Reproduction coffee tables offer a variety of options, with a bottom shelf or drawers incorporated.  Legs are turned and made to reflect the classical lines of period pieces and are often, tapered or carved to give a classical feel to the piece. Circular coffee tables can be supported by a central pedestal with four branch legs.  It would be unusual to have too much decoration on the surface of the coffee table but look out for beautifully matching veneers to give the table a balanced and pleasing quality.
