About this Piece

A charming Neo-classical finely carved wood cheval mirror, partially gilded and ivory painted with a leaf hand carved frame flanked and surmounted by foliate scrolls enclosing a bevelled edge plate, on paw feet with easel chain supports. The original Italian, circa 1780.

The Replica Furniture Collection

The taste for replica furniture can be said to have started in England in the 18th c. It is difficult to pin point exactly, because of course designers have always taken influence from something which has gone before. Technically, one might ascertain the Renaissance as the beginnings of the tradition. From this period, designers were taking inspiration from Greek and Roman designs and interpreting them in to furniture. Up until the reign of Queen Anne, the influences on furniture were continuations and refinements of Gothic and Baroque colloquial styles – Queen Anne style being very refined and light. After Queen Anne came George I, and through the reigns of subsequent Georges did furniture become more and more influenced by Neo Classical designs, imported from the continent by the new King, from Germany.
