The term traditional furniture would describe something made in a conventional manner using an established procedure. Authentic hand made traditional furniture is still available in limited quantities and would be more expensive than mass produced pieces.
Classical designs are still in demand, country homes and Georgian town houses with their high ceilings and decorative cornices are natural homes for traditional furniture made by skilled craftsmen who have learnt their trades from their fathers and grandfathers before them. And why not use the designs from the era of Great Britain’s wealth. These were the styles which were originally designed for such homes and accordingly, it is traditional furniture of the period which still stands comfortably in the room as though it has been there for generations.
Machinery and modern materials reduce the need for the labour intensive skills required to make an authentic hand made piece of traditional furniture. However, the essence of construction and accepted cabinet making practices can still provide a good end result.
Classically styled, traditional furniture made today will give you beautifully made furniture to fit your home, it will not date and will hold the trade mark of the craftsman and artisan involved in its creation. When using the skills of the craftsmen, it is possible to adapt a design to suit personal taste or lifestyle whilst still keeping to the classical lines in traditional furniture making. Original pieces were often tailor made for the client, however, proportion and structure follow a discipline and it would be quite usual for the cabinet maker of the time to complete his commission using this knowledge.
