About this Piece
An ebonised mahogany and parcel gilt Chinoiserie side cabinet. The rectangular molded edge top with protruding rounded corners, above two brass molding paneled drawers with brass handles, above two brass molding paneled and carved doors with hand painted Chinosierie scenes, the base with bound reed carved details flanked by turned and fluted columns and on turned and tapering legs.
Inspired by an original larger Chinoiserie Sideboard in the Billiard Room at Althorp by Claude-Charles Saunier, circa 1785-90. The cabinet was supplied together with a matching commode in March 1791 by Paris marchand mercier Dominique Daguerre to George 2nd Earl Spencer (1758-1834). Widely published in furniture history books this cabinet is an excellent example of fine Louis XVI furniture with Chinoiserie.
Brights of Nettlebed offer the opportunity to own an exquisitely hand-crafted item endorsed by Charles, 9th Earl Spencer, inspired by the collection at Althorp House, built up over 500 years and 20 generations of the same family for their home.
We have sponsored the unmissable Althorp Literary Festival for the last four consecutive years - hearing famous authors in the setting of one of Englands best loved historic houses has proved to be a winning combination. We have also been fortunate for Earl Spencer to give two fascinating talks at our Dorset showroom with all proceeds donated to Whole Child, a charity devoted to improving the lives of orphaned, abandoned, abused, and neglected children worldwide. Donations are also made by us in relation to our sales of Althorp Living History furniture.
