A hand carved mahogany library armchair. The back is in the shape of a ship's transom. The chair's carved with a Coat of Arms centred by the Spencer crest flanked by Victory wreaths. The buttoned seat upholstered in Portland leather.

This hand carved mahogany library armchair with the Spencer crest flanked by Victory wreaths was produced in honour of George Spencer, 2nd Earl Spencer.The appointed First Lord of the Admiralty from 1794 to 1801 (during the French Revolutionary War) to act as political head of the Royal Navy and the government's senior adviser on all naval affairs. This position gave responsibility for the direction and control of Admiralty as well as general administration of the Naval Service of the United Kingdom, that encompassed the Royal Navy, the Royal Marines and other services.
