A Thomas Johnson style mirror - Antique finish.  This George II style giltwood pier mirror is after a design by Thomas Johnson. Hand carved in mahogany, the mirror has been gilded in an antique finish with a distressed finish to the gold dutch metal leaf to expose the red gesso foundation beneath.

The original, Circa 1840 commanded an estimate of $70,000 to $80,000 in April 2008.

Thomas Johnson was a notable British carver, designer and gilder who was born in London.  He fully embraced the rococo style, his designs were more elaborate than his contemporaries.

The mirror surround comprises a medley of C-scrolls, flowering branchwork, acanthus leaves, animals and figures.
